All about ASUS’ first CoPilot+ PC: VivoBook S 15

The ASUS VivoBook S 15 2024 marks a significant step for ASUS, being their first ARM-powered laptop with the Copilot+ AI assistant

Featuring the Snapdragon X Elite processor, it’s designed to deliver an advanced user experience with local AI capabilities

The ASUS VivoBook S 15 is priced at $1,299 in the US and Php 84,995 in the Philippines.

Specs, build, performance, and all those need-to-knows

The VivoBook has always been a practice of design elegance for ASUS and the S15 does not shy away from this.

It adopts a minimalist design with a subtle Cool Silver finish and despite being rather large at 15 inches, it remains thin and light, weighing just 1.42kg and measuring 1.47cm in thickness.

Its all-metal aluminum frame provides a premium feel and robust build quality and is partnered with that trademark ASUS Mil-Std toughness.

ASUS is also known for its high-quality OLED displays, and with the VivoBook S 15, you’re getting a 15.6-inch 3K OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate and 600 nits peak brightness, supporting over a billion colors and covering 100% of the DCI-P3 color gamut.

Connectivity options include four USB ports (2x USB-A 3.1, 2x USB-C 4.0), an HDMI 2.1 port, and a MicroSD card slot. However, it does lack a full-sized SD card reader, which might be a drawback for some multimedia-focused users.

One of its badges boasts being powered by the Snapdragon X Elite processor complete with 12 CPU cores to ensure high performance and efficiency.

It comes with 16GB LPDDR5X RAM and a 1TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD, the latter is upgradeable.

Interestingly, ASUS puts a little gamer touch to this device with the addition of a single-zone RGB keyboard. We also have a physical shutter, a large trackpad, and a 70Wh battery promising up to 18 hours of use.

But what about it being a Copilot+ PC?

First things first, what exactly is a Copilot+ PC? Copilot+ PCs are supposedly a new era of Windows laptops powered by AI.

The VivoBook S 15 2024 is one of the first Copilot+ laptops, integrating the advanced Microsoft Copilot AI assistant. This AI can help with various tasks such as writing, system navigation, and content creation, enhancing productivity and user experience.

With Copilot+ PCs, many but not all of the AI features are processed locally. Under the hood, it does offer performance boosters but as users, we can also benefit from features such as Live Captions, Cocreator and more.

You can, for example, draw a rough image in paint and allow Cocreator to finish it up for you by generating artwork based on your initial sketch. Live Captions can also translate anything it hears from your PC so you’re not limited to just captioning videos.

Additionally, you also have a physical Copilot button that will call up the AI assistant app instantly.

An ASUS exclusive, the VivoBook S 15 also introduces StoryCube — an intelligent AI-powered file management tool.

Acting as your digital librarian, StoryCube adds a new layer to organizing your files by using content recognition to categorize your files, such as photos, documents, or videos, identifying patterns, and tagging them accordingly.

Once you have enough photos, StoryCube can not only identify faces like Google Photos but it can also identify and categorize them into scenes, colors, and more.

You can, for example, search for “Cat” and all cat photos will be displayed. Alternatively, you can input something more broad like “Snow” or “Camp” and it will still be able to find the photos. One of the more interesting features it offers is also Timeline view where you’ll be able to see where, when, and what device your photos were taken all at a glance.

At the moment, certain Copilot features like Recall are unavailable but more features will be added as time passes.
