CES 2024: ROG Phone 8 is now water-resistant and AI-powered

-

At CES 2024, ASUS has officially pulled the curtains back on the highly anticipated ROG Phone 8 series, promising an unparalleled gaming experience.

The ROG Phone 8 now boasts a sleeker design than its predecessor, measuring a mere 8.9mm in thickness and weighing in at 225g.  It’s available in Phantom Black and Rebel Grey, featuring an RGB backlit ROG logo. Enthusiasts eyeing the Pro models will find them exclusively in Phantom Black, adorned with a small OLED display on the back for an added touch of sophistication. ASUS also introduces an IP68 rating, making the ROG Phone 8 the first water-resistant gaming phone.

Despite a slight dip in battery capacity to 5,500mAh, the phone compensates with optimized hardware, ensuring a lasting battery life. The 6.78-inch display takes center stage, featuring minimal bezels, a variable refresh rate, and an impressive peak brightness of 2,500 nits.

At its heart is no less than the formidable Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, accompanied by up to 24GB of LPDDR5X RAM and up to 1TB UFS 4.0 storage. Catering to diverse preferences, the phone supports both 15W Qi wireless charging and a robust 65W HyperCharge system for wired enthusiasts, ensuring rapid charging from 0 to 100% in just 39 minutes. For cooling, the ROG Phone 8 employs conduction cooling — a copper block strategically traverses the motherboard, effectively managing temperatures. And like its predecessors, it’s compatible with the compact AeroActive Cooler X further enhancing cooling efficiency during intense gaming sessions.

The camera setup also gets an upgrade. On the ROG Phone 8 series are a 50-megapixel main camera featuring a 6-axis hybrid gimbal stabilizer, a new 32-megapixel telephoto camera, and a front-facing 32-megapixel shooter.

With AI taking over, ASUS leverages the technology by offering neat little features that can help in gaming. Some examples include Auto Pick Up, Fast Forward, Running Lock, and Auto Press-to-Escape.

As for availability, no word yet from ASUS but it wouldn’t be unlikely to see it by mid-next year.
