AI is for everyone! Or at least that’s what Google wants.
Starting May 15, Google has announced that its AI-powered editing tools, including the highly-coveted AI Eraser, will soon be available to all.
Until now, features like Magic Eraser, Photo Unblur, and Portrait Light were reserved for those with a Google One subscription. This update will now allow users, both Android and iOS, to gain access to a plethora of editing tools without any additional cost, provided they use Google Photos to edit.
Among all the tools, the most talked about and the most wanted is the AI Eraser. Similar to what Samsung heroes on its S24 series, the AI Eraser is a tool that intelligently removes unwanted objects without leaving a trace (or it tries its very hardest not to). This feature, along with others like Photo Unblur and Sky suggestions, will now be within reach regardless of subscription status.

Additionally, Google’s Magic Editor, once exclusive to the Pixel 8/Pixel 8 Pro, will also be available but with a limit of 10 saves per month. You can increase this by subscribing to a Google One plan. As for limitations, most are at a hardware/software level. For example, you’ll need a device running Android 8.0 or higher or iOS 15 or higher.
AI-driven features are what’s “in” this here and are slowly becoming increasingly accessible to consumers. Samsung was one of the heroes of AI with its S24 lineup riddled with such features but Google’s latest announcement marks a significant step forward in democratizing AI-powered editing tools. Other players in the market, like OPPO, are also following suit with their own AI enhancements through OTA updates.
