How the new Canon EOS R50 is a good fit for budding content creators

-

Canon has just revealed its newest lightweight APS-C camera, the Canon EOS R50.

A kind-of successor to the previously released Canon EOS M50, the company does away with the M-branding and moves up its entry-level offering to its R-series. Like the EOS M50, however, the EOS R50 is still targeted towards creators who are at the start of their video creation journey or those who want an easy upgrade to a mirrorless system.

But what exactly makes the Canon EOS R50 a good fit for new creators? Let’s take a look.

Lightweight, ergonomic, and attractive

One of the main draws of using smartphones as main shooting tools for new creators is the convenience it brings being so light. With the new Canon EOS R50, however, you’re also getting a compact and lightweight piece of device that’s able to do so more than a smartphone.

The Canon EOS R50 is built with proper ergonomics in mind as well and features such as the vari-angle touchscreen display provide versatility when shooting. Buttons are also customizable so you can easily reach your most used functions without even entering the menu. It also offers two levels of stabilization to provide smooth video even when handheld.

When the display is in Selfie Mode (camera facing towards the user) the stabilization is automatically switched to Enhanced. This mode is designed for vlogging and helps correct edge distortion and warping caused by wide-angle shots.

Additionally, the Canon EOS R50 also comes in an attractive white colorway apart from the classic black body.

High-quality video and intuitive shooting features

Again, most would argue that modern smartphones are capable of being enough in content creation. But if you want to elevate and make your content stand out, a proper camera can do wonders.

The Canon EOS R50 offers an APS-C sensor (much larger than the 1-inch sensor on smartphones) that offers cropless 4K video at 30p. More importantly, it downsamples from 6K providing more information for cleaner details and better overall image quality compared to regular 4K footage.

Apart from that, Canon also packs the EOS R50 with a host of intuitive features that addresses the needs of modern-day vloggers, content creators, videographers, and more.

With its Dual Piel CMOS AF II system, the EOS R50 can intelligently detect and track people, animals, and vehicles. Users can set their focus using the touch display and the camera will do the rest.

For cases like unboxing or show-and-tell videos, the camera also offers a new Close-up Demo mode. With it, focus can intelligently and smoothly shift depending on the subject or item closest to the camera. The focus is also capable of shifting back to the main subject.

Additionally, it also provides helpful features such as auto-leveling which corrects horizontal tilt, Advance A+ for better night and backlit portraits, creative bracketing, and subject blur guide.

Canon also says that this camera is easy to learn and use so even those unfamiliar with using a mirrorless system can easily adapt.

Plug, play, and send seamlessly

A connected lifestyle is pretty given for most if not all kinds of creators. The ability to get their data, whther photos or videos, easily is often more of a necessity than a convenience.

To address this need, the Canon EOS R50 can not only be connected to Canon’s Camera Connect app, it’s also capable of plug and play streaming.

By connecting to the smartphone app, you can instantly transfer photos and videos from the camera’s memory card straight to your phone either through Wi-Fi or by using a USB-C cable. The EOS R50 also has the ability to transcode videos to create lighter files that can be uploaded to any social media platform.

To stream, you simply need to plug the camera into the computer via a USB-C cable and it will automatically detect it as an external camera — no extra drivers needed.

Friendly price

Investing in equipment is a big deal but with a starting price of PhP 47,998 (body only). the Canon EOS R50 becomes an attractive option for those who want to level up their video and photo quality.

For a complete package, you can get the Canon EOS R50 with an 18-45mm kit lens for PhP 54,998. Purchasing either will get you a free 64GB SD card and access to discounted rates to the Canon Basic Videography Workshop.

The Canon EOS R50 has no specific release date as of writing but is expected to be available this April.
