Huawei Mate XT officially launched as world’s first tri-fold smartphone

It seems two screens aren’t enough for Huawei as the company has officially launched the world’s first tri-fold device, the Huawei Mate XT.

While not a complete secret as it was seen being used in public before its launch, the Mate XT introduces a new folding design to the market, expanding the possibilities for smartphone form factors.

The Mate XT’s tri-fold display offers three configurations. In its folded state, it functions as a standard smartphone with a 6.4-inch OLED screen at a resolution of 2232 × 1008 pixels. Partially unfolded, it expands to a 7.9-inch display (2232 × 2048 pixels), enabling multitasking and improved productivity. When fully opened, it reaches 10.2 inches with a resolution of 2232 × 3184 pixels, offering a larger workspace for media consumption and professional tasks.

The folding mechanism relies on a multi-segment hinge that supports both inward and outward folding.

Huawei has used a combination of high-strength steel and aerospace-grade materials to reinforce the hinge and prevent wear over time. The display itself is an LTPO OLED panel with a 90Hz refresh rate and 1440Hz PWM dimming, designed to balance smooth visuals with power efficiency. The device’s usability varies depending on the configuration — folded for everyday tasks, mid-sized for productivity, and fully extended for applications that benefit from a larger screen.

The Mate XT runs on the Kirin 9010 processor, a 7nm chipset, and is paired with 16GB of RAM and up to 1TB of internal storage. The phone operates on EMUI 14.2, which is based on Android but still does not include Google services like Huawei’s previous smartphone releases.

For its camera system, the Huawei Mate XT is equipped with a 50MP primary sensor with optical image stabilization (OIS) and a variable aperture (f/1.2 to f/4.0), a 12MP ultra-wide-angle lens (f/2.2), and a 12MP periscope telephoto lens with 5.5x optical zoom and OIS. The front-facing camera is 8MP. A 5600mAh battery powers the device, supporting 66W wired charging and 50W wireless charging. It also offers reverse wireless charging.

Pricing for the Mate XT is set at €3,499 in Europe for the 16GB RAM and 1TB storage variant, RM14,999 in Malaysia, and is expected to be available in the Philippines, though local pricing has not yet been confirmed. It comes in three color options: Black, Red, and Umber Gold.
