Japan-exclusive Leica Leitz Phone 3 comes with 1-inch sensor and exclusive features

-

The Leica Leitz Phone 3 is now official but only in Japan. With its last iteration announced back in 2022, Leica has finally unveiled the third-generation Leitz Phone 3 and it’s definitely one for the photographers.

The Leica Leitz Phone 3 cameras

Jumping right into the camera specs, the Leica Leitz Phone 3 is equipped with a dual camera setup headlined by its 47.3-megapixel wide-angle camera powered by a 1-inch CMOS sensor.  For its lens, it’s a 19mm equivalent with an f/1.9 aperture which assures more light is taken in, thus better photos. Around the front is a 12.6-megapixel selfie camera.  Oh, and the main camera has a lens cap, too.

Apart from its powerful 1-inch sensor, the Leitz Phone 3 also offers exclusive features such as Leitz Looks — a software engine that simluates the look of Leica’s most famous M-lenses: Noctilux-M 1:1.2/50, Summilux-M 1:1.4/28 and Summilux-M 1:1.4/35. Additionally, with its variable aperture, the Leitz Phone is capable of simulating apertures from f/1.2 or f/1.4 to f/8. for more precise bokeh control. There’s also Leica Look filters that have been specifically designed for the Leitz Phone.

There’s also Leica Perspective Control. This is feature exclusive to Leica cameras but have now been ported to smartphones. With it, the Leitz Phone 3 is able to correct the perspective of falling vertical lines — like when capturing buildings.  The Leitz Phone 3 also offers two exclusive widgets — Golden Hour and LFI.

The Golden hour widget is a photography tool that can help you pick the ideal time for that ‘golden hour’ based on your location. The LFI widget, on the other hand, is meant to inspire by showcasing curated works from Leica photographers around the world.

And finally, to simulate that Leica shooting experience, the Leitz Phone 3 comes with Leica icons, fonts, viewfinder, and even a Leica shutter sound for the camera.

A strong flagship device

Powering the Leica Leitz Phone 3 is a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and is partnered with a generous 12GB of RAM and 512GB of internal storage, expandable. You also have 5000mAh that should be enough to get you through the day and it also boasts IP64/IP68 water and dust resistance.

The Leitz Phone 3 also keeps its 3.5mm headphone jack and comes with mask-compatible face scanner, fingerprint scanner, and NFC. It runs on Android 14 and comes in a single colorway: Leica Black.  Interestingly, the Leitz Phone 3 boasts a new premium polyacrylic texture which mimics the feel of an actual Leica camera.
