We see all sorts of new devices at CES, but this year, one of the most intriguing is KaraPod — a self-refilling coffee machine that turns air into water.
It provides up to 13 cups of clean drinking water that can be used for coffee every 24 hours.
It’s an act that sounds almost biblical, but the KaraPod is firmly rooted in science. This device uses atmospheric water generation (AWG) to extract moisture from the air and transform it into clean, drinkable water.
The process starts with pulling in surrounding air, filtering it to remove impurities, and then cooling it to condense water vapor. The condensed water is purified, enhanced with essential minerals like magnesium and zinc, and dispensed as mineral-rich, 9.2+ pH alkaline water.
Designed to be compact and modern, the KaraPod blends easily into any home. It’s made from BPA-free materials with a stainless steel finish and weighs about 70 lbs (32 kg).
The device stores water in a 2.5-gallon tank and operates with minimal noise and energy consumption. Plus, it’s plug-and-play—requiring no installation, plumbing, or infrastructure.
KaraPod’s unique ability to create water even in low-humidity environments as low as 5% makes it suitable for places like Arizona or other dry regions.
However, the amount of water it generates depends on the surrounding humidity levels. In high-humidity environments, KaraPod performs optimally, producing over 2 gallons of water daily.
But in extremely dry climates, output may be lower.
A Sustainable Alternative with real-world applications
KaraPod offers an environmentally friendly solution by reducing reliance on bottled water. It’s ideal for households looking to cut down on plastic waste or for those in areas where clean drinking water may not always be accessible. Additionally, the device dehumidifies and purifies the surrounding air, creating a healthier indoor environment by reducing mold risks.
However, it’s important to keep expectations realistic. While the KaraPod offers a futuristic solution to water scarcity, it’s not a one-size-fits-all device. Its reliance on environmental factors like humidity means its performance may vary based on location and weather conditions.
Price and Availability
The KaraPod is set to launch later this year, priced at $3,299. Preorders will begin in Q2 2025, and it will be available globally through Kara Water’s website.
