In a groundbreaking collaboration, Samsung is joining forces with Hyundai to seamlessly integrate Samsung’s SmartThings smart home platform with Hyundai and Kia’s connected car services.
This partnership aims to create a cohesive ecosystem, enhancing the connectivity between smart homes and connected cars. Users will have the capability to control various aspects of their cars from the comfort of their homes using SmartThings, managing features such as air conditioning and windows.
Conversely, while in the car, users can supposedly control home devices like TVs and air conditioning systems. The collaboration also includes the development of an integrated home energy management service, allowing users to seamlessly integrate their cars into SmartThings routines for a holistic approach to energy usage.
In envisioning practical scenarios, Samsung highlights instances where a Galaxy smartphone’s morning alarm triggers a series of actions, such as opening curtains, turning on lights and the TV.
Additionally, when preparing to leave for work, the user’s car will adjust to an ideal temperature, and key information like the EV battery status will be displayed on the smartphone and TV screens. Hyundai provides additional examples, such as using the ‘Home Mode’ during a hot summer evening commute to activate the air conditioner, air purifier, robot vacuum, and lights for a comfortable living space.
Alternatively, users can initiate the ‘Away Mode’ before leaving, turning off unnecessary lights, starting the robot vacuum, and pre-activating the vehicle’s air conditioning.
Despite the promising features, it’s essential to note that this collaboration is still in its early stages, with the companies recently signing a memorandum of understanding. Images shared by Samsung are labeled as “examples” of “services to be developed,” suggesting that practical implementation is still in progress.
The specific Hyundai and Kia models that will support SmartThings remain unclear, but both companies commit to developing stable infotainment systems and providing updates to existing vehicles. While the vision for seamlessly integrated living is exciting, the timeline for full-scale implementation remains uncertain. Stay tuned for further updates as Samsung and Hyundai continue to shape the future of connected living.
