Sony has introduced the second-generation FE 85mm F1.4 GM II (SEL85F14GM2) premium portrait lens.
Apart from making it more compact this time around, Sony has also made significant improvements to the autofocus speed, making it three times faster than the original. It also offers improved subject tracking (up to 7x more precise) and can handle high-speed bursts of up to 120 frames per second.
The FE 85mm F1.4 GM II features two XA (extreme aspherical) and two ED (extra-low dispersion) lens elements that help minimize chromatic aberrations and distortions. Sony’s Nano AR Coating II further enhances optical performance by reducing flare and ghosting, making it easier to capture clear images in bright or backlit conditions.
With an 11-blade circular aperture, the Sony FE 85mm F1.4 GM II produces creamy and rounded background blur. Sony optimized spherical aberration in both design and manufacturing to ensure the bokeh offers no sharp edges or color fringing. T
For video, this lens is built with XD linear motor that can provide fast, precise, and quiet autofocus. The lens minimizes focus breathing and supports in-body focus breathing compensation with compatible Sony cameras, ensuring smooth transitions in video shots.
As mentioned, the FE 85mm F1.4 GM II remains lightweight and compact, making it easier to handle during long shoots. It has a filter diameter of 77mm, a diameter of 84.7mm, and a length of 107.3mm. Its durable design includes a fluorine-coated front element that resists fingerprints, dust, and moisture, and it is built to withstand tough outdoor shooting conditions.
For added flexibility, the lens includes two customizable focus hold buttons and an AF/MF switch, allowing users to switch between autofocus and manual focus modes quickly. The independent aperture ring provides intuitive control over exposure settings, while the Linear Response MF focus control allows for precise manual focus adjustments.

The Sony FE 85mm F1.4 GM II is already available in the US for approximately US$ 1,799.99 USD.
