Toyota Motor Philippines local plant goes green with 100% renewable energy

-

Toyota Motor Philippines Corporation (TMP) is taking significant steps toward carbon neutrality by signing a Retail Supply Contract (RSC) with a local supplier, Team Energy Corporation.

This move will provide green-backed electricity for TMP’s manufacturing operations, aiming to achieve a 100% Renewable Energy (RE) ratio. About 90% of the company’s total electricity requirement will be supplied by the new agreement, complementing the remaining RE sourced onsite from an existing rooftop solar power system.

From December 26, Team Energy Corporation will supply TMP with electricity backed by International Renewable Energy Certificates (I-REC(E)), ensuring its sourcing from a domestic RE plant. TMP President Atsuhiro Okamoto emphasized that this energy transition will neutralize TMP’s Scope 2 Emissions, particularly indirect carbon dioxide emissions from purchased electricity for manufacturing operations.

This move positions TMP’s automotive manufacturing plant in Santa Rosa City, Laguna, as a front-runner and early achiever of the 100% RE ratio target for Toyota in the ASEAN region.

TMP aims to decarbonize the rest of its energy sources for manufacturing, focusing on petrol-type generators, ovens, and boilers for painting processes by the year 2035.

Aligned with Global Toyota’s commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2035, TMP’s efforts contribute to the Toyota Environmental Challenge (TEC) 2050.

Beyond electrified vehicles, Toyota emphasizes reducing the environmental impact of the automotive industry’s value chain through life cycle actions. This includes engaging the supply chain, logistics, and dealer networks in decarbonization efforts.

Local Toyota suppliers and dealers in the Philippines are following TMP’s lead by implementing energy efficiency and RE initiatives. Companies like Denso Ten Philippines Corporation, Hino Motors Philippines Corporation, Denso Philippines Corporation, and International Wiring Systems Philippines are investing in onsite solar power facilities or procuring RE through the Philippine government’s Green Energy Option Program (GEOP). In terms of environmental standards, Toyota suppliers and established dealers nationwide are certified under ISO 14001, aligning with Toyota’s environmental management systems.

TMP, as the distributor of Toyota and Lexus vehicles in the Philippines and the largest manufacturer of local models, continues to advance its commitment to sustainability.

The company is also leading the introduction of its new Completely Knocked Down (CKD) model, the Toyota IMV 0 (Zero) or “Next Generation Tamaraw,” with prototypes unveiled to the public in August 2023.
