While there were leaks of a possible second console from Microsoft, fans didn’t quite expect it to happen so soon. But Microsoft has officially unveiled not just its second next-generation console but also its smallest. Announced through an official trailer, the Xbox Series S is the company’s entry-level console releasing at the same time as the Xbox Series X in November.
Compared to its big brother, the Xbox Series S is nearly 60% smaller making it the smallest Xbox ever. The console will be all-digital, meaning games will purely be stored on its hard drive and will not be able to accept physical game discs. It’s capable of outputting 1440p up to 120FPS with 4K upscaling for games.
Boasting of “next-gen speed”, the Xbox Series S is fitted with a custom NVME SSD powered by the Xbox velocity architecture to ensure fast loading times, instant game switching, and steadier frame rates. It will also be capable of DirectX raytracing, variable rate shading, and variable refresh rates.
The Xbox Series S is officially priced at a more affordable US$299 compared to the US$499 price tag of the Xbox Series X. Windows Central confirms that both consoles will launch on November 10 of this year.
