Yamaha Motor to develop battery-swapping network through ENYRING

-

Yamaha Motor has introduced ENYRING GmbH, a newly established company focused on providing subscription-based services for swappable batteries in compact urban electric vehicles.

The system is similar to Taiwan’s Gogoro battery-swapping ecosystem. Instead of putting the focus on charging, this initiative by Yamaha aims to create a closed loop by reusing and recycling batteries in collaboration with European circularity leaders, utilizing recycled materials to produce new products.

Unlike Gogoro’s focus on scooters, however, Yamaha and ENYRING will seemingly first dabble in a battery-swapping network for e-bikes in Europe — specifically in the Netherlands and Berlin.

The goal is to build a sustainable, recycling-oriented society that not only alleviates the economic and time burden on customers but also minimizes environmental impact. ENYRING, headquartered in Berlin, Germany, and officially formed this month, plans to commence operations in the first half of 2025.

The company envisions strategic collaborations between Yamaha Motor and its partners, with expansion plans for Germany, starting in Berlin, and the Netherlands upon launching operations. ENYRING will focus on providing battery rental services for compact urban electric vehicles in the low-speed range, primarily targeting eBikes. The subscription-based batteries can be conveniently swapped at designated battery stations across the city, eliminating recharging hassles and the need to purchase new batteries when reaching the end of their lifecycle.

Moreover, used batteries unsuitable for mobility purposes are repurposed as storage batteries, disassembled into cells, recycled, and transformed into new batteries.

This endeavor is part of Yamaha Motor’s commitment to creating a carbon-neutral world, aiming to offer fresh value in daily transportation. The project contributes to waste reduction, the sustainable utilization of natural resources, and enhanced energy efficiency, aligning with the Yamaha Motor Group Environmental Plan 2050’s core objectives.
