Canon, during its livestream press conference, has revealed key specs for its upcoming camera — the EOS R5. It’s expected to shoot 8K video, come with in-body stabilization, Dual Pixel AF, and more.
The mirrorless camera, although still unofficial, is already shaping up to be an imaging monster for photographers and videographers alike. From previous reports and the recent announcements, here’s a roundup of key features for the EOS R5.
This full-frame camera can shoot up to 8K resolution with no cropping using the full-width of the sensor. Details are supposed to be intact in a way that its users can select and capture high-resolution still images even from video footage. In addition to that, it will also be able to record 4K footage at 120fps for those buttery smooth shots with really detailed quality.
Getting more into the nitty-gritty, it has an internal 8K/30p RAW video recording and external 4K/60p video over HDMI thanks to its new CMOS sensor. For video colorists out there, you’d be glad to know that it can shoot both 8K and 4K video in 4:2:2 10-bit using Canon Log H.265 or HDR PQ to bring out and have control over more details.
The EOS R5 will have in-body image stabilization that will work hand-in-hand with the stabilization system of its partnered lenses. Dual Pixel autofocus is also available for all its video modes, resolutions, and frame rates so autofocus should be more reliable especially for those starting out with videography. Additionally, an Animal AF feature will be present for automatically tracking wildlife subjects (birds, cats, dogs) in motion
Canon says it can shoot photos in burst mode at 12fps for its mechanical shutter and 20fps in Live View which is impressive as its silent shutter performance matches the EOS-1D X Mark III — the company’s current flagship camera. With those numbers, it can be used for fast-moving subjects like shooting at a football game or capturing a predator in action.
The upcoming EOS R5 will run on dual card slots but with different systems. One will be CFexpress which is capable of ultra-fast transfer speeds but at the same time has a more modest SD UHD-II for its other slot so you don’t need to whip out your expensive memory cards all the time.
