The Game Gear Micro is the tiniest handheld console from Sega

When the original Game Gear was released back in 1990, critics were quick to complain about its large screen size and short battery life. Well after many, many years later, Sega releases a new, drastically smaller, Game Gear Micro.

Created as part of the company’s anniversary celebration, the Game Gear Micro looks really similar to its older counterpart. The only real noticeable change in design is that it’s been made smaller, hence, the ‘micro’ on its name.

But the company may have gone a tad bit too far in shrinking the Game Gear. This new device is but a mere 3.15 inches wide and houses a tiny 1.15-inch colored screen. It also has a USB port for charging and a headphone jack. With that, it seems that Sega created these devices as more of a collectible than an actual handheld console.

The Game Gear Micro comes in four color variants that come with four games built-in. Interestingly enough, each color variant of the device will house a different set of games.

Game Gear Micro Big Window

Despite all that, the Game Gear Micro is still technically a handheld console. But how exactly will players play on a screen that’s just a little over an inch? Well, Sega is also releasing the Big Window accessory which magnifies the screen to a much more appropriate viewing size. It serves the same purpose as the original Big Window from the 90s and carries the same design as well. Sega is throwing this in for free if you buy all four color variants as a bundle.

Sadly, the Game Gear Micro will exclusively be released in Japan. It’s already available for pre-order as a bundle for JP¥ 27,255. Individual units are sold for JP¥ 4,980 each.
