Toyota’s new anime Grip has humans fighting evil autonomous cars

Soul-less automated cars versus humans set in the future where drag racing is legal. That’s the plot of Grip: A Toyota Story.

Oh, and it also stars a Toyota GR Corolla, GR Supra, and GR86.

Officially commissioned by Toyota USA and inspired by Initial D, Grip: A Toyota Story is a 5-series online series that ” combines heart-pounding action, adrenaline-fueled races, and a battle between the human spirit and computer control.” Check out the trailer below.

In Grip, the world is dominated by self-driving vehicles and it’s up the the hero Jae Kang, armed with nothing but a Toyota GR Corolla and a healthy dose of determination to set out to reclaim the streets for humanity. Teaming up with the spirited Linh “Nitro” Lam and the fiery Kumail Jo, they embark on a daring mission to outsmart the villainous Dr. Aron Synth, a once-famous driver who lost his hand in a presumed racing accident and now holds a vengeance towards human drivers and driving.

Animation for Grip was done by Sola Digital Arts who have shows like Elden Ring, Blade Runner: Black Lotus, and the Ultraman Final season anime in their portfolio. The first episode of Grip: A Toyota Story is now out and available to stream for free.
