Why I’m super stoked for the new GMC Hummer EVs

One of my first true heartbreaks in my young adult life was when GMC announced the retirement of the Hummer brand in 2010.

This is due to the fact that the Hummer H1 was my all-time dream car since I was a child. It was a very iconic off-roader designed for the military called the HUMVEE and was later transformed into a civilian gas-guzzling luxury SUV called the HUMMER H1. It was then followed by the H2 and H3 as updated models.

During its time, it was the king of off-roaders — unrivaled in capability and performance. They had tech and features not commonly seen around. With its 37-inch tires, 16-inch ground clearance, four-wheel independent suspension, locking diffs, and all-aluminum body, it would make any off-road enthusiast drool.

It was in a class of its own. I remember waiting for the launch of their next model, the Hummer HX, which they announced in 2008 and even making an appearance in the movie Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen. Although, it never came to production as Hummer declared bankruptcy in 2009 and shut down production in 2010 due to the American economic downturn. For 10 years, the brand has been stagnant and was never heard of again until today.

In October of 2020, GMC finally debuted the HUMMER EV truck through its online launch and boy was I blown away with all the tech and capabilities presented. And just a few days ago, the Hummer EV SUV was launched and will be available in early 2023. This is the EV off-roader, I’m sure, that will set the standard for EV off-roading.

Futuristic-looking with HUMVEE DNA

The GMC HUMMER EV SUV completes the HUMMER EV family and features a 126.7-inch wheelbase for tight proportions and a maneuverable body.

Seeing this vehicle for the first time, it still holds true to its HUMVEE design heritage with that boxy shape, broad shoulder lines, wide stance, and that commanding presence with its space-age design cues inspired by NASA’s Apolo lunar expedition. It was something out of a sci-fi movie that really gave me chills. It was the same feeling I had in my Hummer-obsessed days.

The GMC HUMMER EV is designed to be an off-road beast, with new features developed to help conquer virtually any obstacle or terrain.

The facia still follows that familiar brawny Hummer look — the iconic Hummer grill replaced with sleek and futuristic running lights. A masculine front bumper complemented with beefy recovery hooks and a massive metal bash plate runs all the way under the front axle. It also features a fully removable infinity roof with modular sky panels which also categorizes this vehicle as a convertible.

The interior design is also inspired by the moon expedition that they call “The Lunar Shadow” and “Lunar Horizon” along with the sea of tranquillity pattern that can be seen throughout. Really nice touches.

All that electric power!

The GMC Hummer EV can deliver up to 830hp for the SUV model and a whopping 1000hp for the truck with up to 11,500 lb-ft of torque (wheel torque) and is capable of enabling 0-60 mph in approximately 3.5-seconds and 3-seconds for the SUV and Truck, respectively, in “Watts To Freedom” mode.  All that power with zero emissions.

Additionally, a 20-module, double-stacked Ultium battery will offer more than 300 miles (SUV) and a 24-module Ultium battery pack with 350 miles (Truck) of range on a full charge and power for the three-motor e4WD drive system. It also features an 800-volt DC public fast-charging capability of up to 300kW. Its industry-first technology mechanically also switches the batteries from parallel to series mode during charging. For a 100-mile range,  it takes only ten minutes to charge!

Smart technologies

The vehicle boasts a large, 13.4-inch diagonal infotainment screen and 12.3-inch diagonal driver information center display that convey a wealth of vehicle performance and driver awareness information — including trail mapping projection from the myGMC app.

Its new Digital Key allows owners to use their smartphone as the key fob for their HUMMER EV. The technology detects its owner’s phone and its location in proximity to the vehicle, enabling a number of passive operations such as approach lighting, entry unlock, and vehicle operation.

Thriving on off-road trails

The most talked-about feature that makes the GMC Hummer EV stand out among competitors is the four-wheel steering with crab walk making this vehicle more maneuverable in tight spaces and giving it a better turning radius than most sedans.

It is also equipped with front and rear eLockers that allow all individual motors to spin at the same speed without having a physical locking differential. Thanks to the adjustable air suspensions, getting yourself out of muddy situations (literally) are made easy with extract mode, this enables the suspension to raise an additional 6 inches – significant for water wading, extra clearance for extreme off-road situations, and negotiating challenging obstacles.

Another highlighted feature is the 18 camera views for the Truck model and seventeen on the SUV. Adding to that is a standard HD Surround Vision that includes a waterproof underbody as well as forward-and-rear-facing cameras for real-time views of the terrain. This aims to help you pick the best lines along trails. A washer function and replaceable lens protectors also help you see clearly.

Using multiple cameras to display a digital overhead image of the area around HUMMER EV, HD Surround Vision allows you to maneuver off-road and navigate tight spaces when traveling at low speeds.

From bold and futuristic design cues, to cleverly executed details, the GMC HUMMER EV reimagines an instantly-recognizable silhouette for a modern, all-electric future.

Off-Road Widgets offer a myriad of information related to the HUMMER EV’s selectable capabilities and performance readouts in off-road driving scenarios — everything from the ride height and eLocker engagement to compass headings, pitch/roll status, and more.

Hummer is back

The GMC Hummer EV, on paper, appears to have the best in class features in 4×4 capabilities. It has the range, the power, mechanics & engineering, and the competencies of becoming the new king of off-road vehicles. They have set the bar high and it is truly exciting to see this beast in action in the real world.

Hummer is back.

vivo Y35: A premium midranger with 44W FastCharge!

This is a sponsored post by vivo Philippines

The pain of running out of juice!

Everybody knows the anxiety and stress caused when our phones run out of battery especially when we need them most. You could be on an important call, booking your ride home, or simply wanting to play games or stream videos online.

On top of that, if your phone doesn’t charge fast, you’re pretty much tied to the wall socket and if you need to leave, then you’ll still need to charge on the go via a power bank. In the end, there are just too many things to think about and that can all be avoided if only you had a more capable phone.

This is what vivo is offering in the form of the new Y35. It carries a large capacity battery and ‘Quick as a Flash’ charging time. There’s actually more that it offers like a generous 256GB storage, an expanded 8GB RAM, and a stylish design and we’re taking a look at all those in this article.

Power for days

Carrying a 5000mAh battery, the phone could easily last an entire day and even leave enough juice to make it until the following day. Even if your whole day involves working on or using your phone, the vivo Y35 and its power-saving features allow you to put your mind at ease without worrying about looking for the next wall socket.

And if you need to charge the Y35, its 44W fast charging technology tops up the device quickly so you don’t have to wait long to use the device again. In approximately 30 minutes after plugging the phone, you can already get up to 70% of power that should be able to last you the entire day.

This has been a really useful feature for me during those times I only had a short time to charge before I needed to leave.

Capable internals

Its battery and charging speed aren’t all there is to look forward to in this phone. The vivo Y35 is also equipped with capable internals to deliver high performance whether for productivity or even for leisure like gaming.

For one, it carries a large 256GB of storage space. With a size like that, you can fit all your media like photos and videos and even install games that require a good chunk of space in your phone.

As someone who shoots a lot, this is one of the main features that I really like on the Y35 since I no longer have to worry about running out of storage.

vivo is also proud to claim that this phone is the first in the series to have an additional 8GB extended RAM. This means it can borrow virtual RAM to better accommodate resource-intensive apps or games and provide a smooth experience especially when jumping from one app to another.

This came into play when we use the device for producing content online. From taking photos, editing them, to uploading them on different social media platforms, we could easily switch back and forth between multiple apps with ease and no hiccups.

Meanwhile, running the show is a Snapdragon 680 processor that promises uninterrupted performance day in and day out. This level of performance is also thanks to the company’s updated Multi-Turbo 5.5 that uses AI algorithm to ensure a more optimized workflow by efficiently allocating computing power.

This is great for power users at work or mobile gamers as lag should be greatly reduced even during continuous usage. True enough, during those down times that we just want a match or two on Mobile Legends yielded an enjoyable and immersive experience. Heat management and dissipation are also commendable as the phone doesn’t get too hot even after using it continuously.

Smart and professional-grade cameras

For those who like shooting using their phones, the vivo Y35 also packs a set of cameras that should be more than enough for your day-to-day snaps. The rear cameras are headlined by a 50-megapixel lens that boasts a large sensor to effectively capture images better.

Having this kind of sensor makes it great to be used in low light scenarios where details are usually hard to retain. It also minimizes unwanted elements in photos like digital noise and the likes to provide clear and high-definition images.

Adding to the main shooter are your 2-megapixel bokeh camera and another 2-megapixel macro sensor that gather more data and information to produce professional-grade shots. On the flip side, a 16-megapixel selfie camera ensures that your self portraits are always on point and clear no matter how bright or dimly lit your surroundings are.

Trendy design

The vivo Y35 is not only beefed up inside, its overall design has also been given attention to for everyday use. It comes in two colors – Dawn Gold and Agate Black – and both have their own unique characteristics. You can choose to go for a more refined look with the Y35 in Dawn Gold or choose a combination of calm yet dynamic with the Agate Black color.

Flip it around and you’ll see its large 6.58-inch Full HD+ display. This abundance in screen real estate makes it possible to comfortably use the device for work or be easily immersed with visuals and sound when playing games. This also makes it easy to share content with someone else as more than one person can comfortably watch even from a distance.

Additionally, even though the phone packs a large battery, it was still able to make the form factor not look bulky. It even feels nice and surprisingly lightweight so you don’t have to worry about straining your hands even with extended periods of use.

Price and promos

The vivo Y35 has an SRP of PhP 14,999 and the company is even making it easier to get one for yourself. It’s available in installment plans for credit card users (up to 6 – 12 months) and Home Credit members (up to 6, 9, 12, 15, or 18 months).

It’s available for purchase online via Shopee, Lazada, TikTok Shop, and vivo e-store, as well as offline at vivo concept stores and kiosks nationwide. For those buying online, you can also get a free DITO SIM card and Voguard wireless TWS until limited supplies last.

Final thoughts

The vivo Y35 is one capable smartphone for your everyday use. It builds its specialties on pain points familiar to everyone and addresses them with its 5000mAh battery and 44W FastCharge on top of delivering good performances in other aspects as well.

I also like the fact that it comes with 256GB of space so storage anxiety will no longer be your thing just like how the Y35 solved battery anxiety for its users. The vivo Y35 is a prime example of a device that packs the essentials ensuring a pleasant mobile experience for its users.
