Mosonth 2K QHD webcam review: Bang for your buck performance

By now, a lot of us have better adapted to our new living situations — aka doing most things from home. We’ve shown you gadgets to help stay fit, devices to help live alone easier, and even a new monitor that should boost productivity.

When it comes to working from home, video conferences are now the next best thing to seeing and discussing with your colleagues. This is why a good webcam is now an essential peripheral for your computer as it helps make you look more professional and presentable during online meetings rather than using your laptop’s built-in, low-res webcam.

What we have here is a 2K QHD webcam from Mosonth with a built-in microphone and comes with its own tripod. The company specializes in various consumer electronic devices with an array of products available online. Is the device good for everyday use? Let’s find out.

Design

It comes with a pretty standard design and that’s not totally a bad thing. Although what I personally like about it is its horizontal orientation that’s not as obvious and visually obtrusive as webcams with rounded form factors.

Material is mostly made of plastic with a silver color giving accents to its otherwise all-black body. Its face comes with a glossy finish which could be prone to scratches in the long run. Looking closely, there are pinholes for its microphone system flanking the 2K sensor.

One helpful thing about its design is this focus ring as it’s not only for show and it actually lets you focus the sensor manually so you have better control.

The camera comes with two points of hinges — one to tilt its lens up and down and adjust your framing, while the other makes it possible to clamp on top of your computer’s monitor or display.

If you don’t want a high angle, you may also opt to just attach the included small tripod to the base of the webcam to find a good spot to position it on your table. I had no problems with either — the tripod rotates 360° and clamping it to a monitor is sturdy enough and doesn’t fall off.

Features

Desktop monitor as source of light on face

As established earlier, it features a 2K camera with 2560 x 1440 (QHD) resolution at 30fps. To produce a decent field of view, it captures a wide viewing angle of 67° and promises to eliminate the fish-eye effect. Although in my personal experience, there’s still a noticeable warp but it’s something easily forgivable.

With its plug-and-play approach, it’s very easy to use and there are no dedicated software to tweak its settings on. For that, you’d have to use other webcam software like YouCam or Zoom to be able to apply skin enhancements or add effects.

Mosnth 2K Webcam - The Modern Creatures

It’s got Auto White Balance that should be able to perceive what light temperature to use, but there are times that it misreads color information so colors could come a bit off. Again, manual control over its settings would come in handy in this situation. Additionally, it’s got a manual focus that’s able to get a bit of natural blur for your background.

It might also be helpful to know that this webcam is compatible with different platforms and apps like Facebook, YouTube, and Zoom so it can be easily used for game streaming, online classes, and more.

Performance

Low light sample 1

With its QHD resolution, details are impressive and picture quality is more than enough for a Zoom call with your peers and bosses. Its contrast also gives more depth to the face and avoids a flat look so that’s another plus. Even in low light scenarios (which is usually my setup), the webcam is still able to produce acceptable quality.

I’ve also been able to use this webcam in some live streams in partnership with brands and while it’s obviously not in the same league as mirrorless cameras used as webcams, it’s definitely passable for online usage.

My biggest complaint would have to be its Auto White Balance that sometimes is a hit-and-miss on its own, but since it could be fixed by downloading a separate software, I could look past it. Plus, with its asking price, you really couldn’t ask for much.

Low light sample 2

There’s also that slight issue of warping especially for the edges that might not be a big deal for some, but I believe is worth pointing out.

Mosonth 2K Webcam - The Modern Creatures

Audio performance is clear but nothing out of the ordinary. It gives you a generous distance to pick up voice so you don’t necessarily have to be close to the device. Noise reduction is also present and helps isolate your voice.

Creature Feature

As always, in our reviews, The Modern Creatures aims to find special features in devices that make them worth having — a Creature Feature if you will. For the Mosonth 2K webcam, it would have to be its QHD resolution that captures sharp images with good color.

It easily steps up the quality of your video during calls and at its price, it’s a great feature to have.

Pricing and final thoughts

Available online for US$ 29.99 (approx. PhP 1.5K), the Mosonth 2K QHD webcam is a great buy for its price. You get detailed picture quality that does well even in low light, a flexible mounting system, and a decent microphone.

It’s a webcam that offers exactly what you’re looking for if you’re on the market for an affordable but reliable device to improve your video quality during today’s online meetings.

Celebrating Christmas with vivo Y22s and its 50MP SuperNight camera

This is a sponsored post by vivo Philippines

The Filipino Christmas season

There’s no denying that Christmas in the Philippines is known to be a celebration that spans months across. As soon as September 1 hits, expect Christmas songs playing in malls and decors starting to creep up the streets and lamp posts.

Shot with vivo Y22s

vivo recognizes this cheerful occasion and wants to step up your Christmas celebration by offering a device that can keep up with all your festivities through its #MaxOutTheNight campaign.

Headlining this is the vivo Y22s which can easily capture special moments in different lighting conditions with its 50MP SuperNight camera, store them without worries in its 128GB internal storage (expandable to 1TB), call loved ones, play mobile games with family members, and last the entire Noche Buena without running out of juice!

Here are some reasons why the vivo Y22s could be the perfect gift for you or your loved ones this season.

vivo Y22s for your Noche Buena

50MP SuperNight camera

Preserving memories when everyone is home is, of course, one of the things you’d want to do during your celebration, and this phone is equipped with exactly what you need.

The 50-megapixel SuperNight camera of vivo Y22s can capture clear photos even at night – from the feast of food to your aunt/uncles laughing and having a great time – you get detailed photos that will capture the moments you’d want to look back on.

90Hz refresh rate

During those downtimes or while waiting for everyone to arrive, you can use the Y22s to play a few games and be immersed in the process with its 90Hz refresh rate.

This ensures that you get smoother movements to enjoy gaming overall. The fast refresh rate is even noticeable when you’re simply browsing on your phone and it just elevates the user experience. Truly, it’s sometimes the subtle things that make things more enjoyable.

Multi Turbo 5.5

To further bring an immersive performance while using the phone, the Y22s comes with Multi Turbo 5.5. This feature from vivo optimizes not just CPU usage but even network congestion so you get an uninterrupted game time.

Lags are kept to a minimum and connectivity should be stable and fast for those competitive online matches.

Up to 16GB Dynamic RAM

In terms of the components under the hood, the phone comes with up to 16GB Dynamic RAM which means it allocates virtual memory from storage to help the device handle more demanding processes.

The use of additional RAM ensures faster performance even with simultaneous apps open so whether you’re showing your most recent travel photos to people around or uploading shots of food on the table, you can switch from one app to another without hiccups.

Snapdragon 680 CPU

This capable chipset ensures that it can handle tasks you throw at it as it can run most of today’s games flawlessly. Running out of juice won’t have to be always on your mind as the processor is also more power efficient compared to its predecessor.

It’s a powerful processor that enables users to freely run apps they need to run and do what they need to do.

5000mAh battery + 18W FastCharge

Speaking of running out of juice, it’s got ample capacity at 5000mAh and once you drain it out, its 18W FastCharge technology kicks in to be able to top up the phone in a matter of minutes to be able to use it again.

This tandem alone will keep your phone powered throughout the entire celebration!

128GB internal storage

One thing that users are always concerned about especially during the holidays is that their phone storage easily gets full. This should not be a problem for the Y22s with its 128GB internal storage.

If, by any chance, you think you’ll be able to max that out with all the media files and apps you have, the phone’s storage can be expandable up to 1TB via a microSD slot. That should at least be able to last you until the next Christmas season, right?

Ultra Game Mode

And to keep the fun nonstop, the phone is also armed with Ultra Game Mode that lets you focus on your match while gaming. It keeps incoming notifications in the background like calls and messages to keep distractions on the down low.

The vivo Y22s even comes with Ear Customized Audio Effect that offers presets for users’ different hearing capabilities. This way, you get sound delivery while playing music or watching videos that’s designed for your listening profile.

Design

Of course, we didn’t forget about its design. The Y22s has that premium touch thanks to its minimal approach and 2.5D curved screen. Colors available are Summer Cyan, which we have with us, and Starlit Blue.

I personally like Summer Cyan since it comes with this warm tones that turns cooler depending on how light hits it. The phone also features this textured finish that just adds flair to the body of the phone.

It’s definitely a phone that can turn heads.

Personal feature picks

As we’ve spent time with the device even with Noche Buena still to come, we could already say that its 50-megapixel shooter will fair well for the upcoming celebration. Colors are vibrant but not overdone, and details are intact even when lighting conditions are not ideal.

Its nighttime capabilities are also up to par with more expensive phones in the market today and can definitely keep up with all the activities you might have for the night.

This camera system is perfectly complemented by its 128GB internal storage to store all your media in. Whether it’s photos, videos or games, you wouldn’t have to right away worry about running out of space.

Plus, to keep the device powered, its 5000mAh battery capacity is enough to last you a whole day of usage and charging is quick thanks to its 18W FastCharge technology. With this phone, you wouldn’t have to always keep a powerbank close by just to ensure your smartphone is juiced up.

With these features working hand-in-hand, you’re able to achieve not just better photos for everyday use but also capable components that bring an efficient and smooth user experience.

Price and availability

The vivo Y22s could be yours for as low as PhP 10,999 for the 4GB/128GB variant while an 8GB/128GB option is also available for PhP 12,999. The phone is also available via installment plans at Home Credit or thru major credit cards.
